spinal health, cultivates functional strength & mobility, and enables the release of muscular
tension in the back, neck and shoulders.
It includes the use of the BackMitra – a simple and ingenious prop that aids in the re-
alignment of the natural curves of the spine and helps create more space, grace and ease in
The spine houses the central nervous system and it is literally the backbone of our ability to move, sleep, and function properly. Almost every
movement originates from our spine, so taking care of the spine should be of utmost importance.
The idea behind the BackMitra has its origins in India where yoga teachers began to use different tools to create space in their students’ upper back and shoulder area. Mr Iyengar used wooden blocks to
achieve this goal. In more recent times, the BackMitra was created by Guy Hamaekers in collaboration with Brigitte Longueville. This spinal workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and holds as much of a preventative approach as it holds the potential to aid the recovery of injury.

lowered emotions and energy, affecting how well you sleep and even how you respond to stress.
A strong and relaxed back supports a resilient and calm nervous system. Learning to slow down and rest back from the busyness of our lives, we begin to access and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Your ability to optimally rest and digest is how we rebalance the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) fight, flight or freeze state. Living too long in the SNS mode is exhausting and depleting. One of the primary focuses in
this workshop is to experience the relaxation response. From here, we become more resourceful in learning to self-regulate our minds and emotions and self-heal the body. Now is Always the Perfect Time to Start.
